Calm before the Storm

By: Marcus Smith

Minutes before the Tsunami struck several coastal cities through out southeast Asia, dozens of locals were seen walking down the beaches admiring the receding shoreline that had withdrawn into the ocean a hundred yards or more. Little did these poor souls kow that the receding shoreline was caused by as earthquake that had shook the ocean floor minutes before. And when it was already too late these poeple were staring at a 50 foot wall of water coming at them like a train.

It was the calm before the storm.

As much as I do not enjoy bringing to our memories such devasting and deadly events, there is, I believe, a critical lesson for us to learn during this present "political calm" before the storm.

The storm I am referring to is not one of raging waters caused by powerful earthquakes. It is not one of waves swallowing up cities or winds carrying away homes. It is one, I dar say, much more catastrophic and far more deadly: the destruction of our Constitution, and more importantly, of the rights we so cherish within it is that storm.

This newsletter was designed to deal with contemporary issues in the political world that threaten such a destruction of our way of life. The first three Issues of the Volume have been sete apart for a general overview of the Constitution itself. And from this point on I had planned on delving into the issues of modern American politics so that we migh be more aware of the tempest that is coming very soon.

However, I feel like that is a mistake.

It is my hope that of the few out there who read these letters, there will be at least one who will not be fooled by the receding shorelines of American politics today and from these newsletters find the energy inside to warn others of the coming storm.

In considering this goal I have come to realize that such an energy was not placed inside my heart by delving into the political issues of the day; only liberals and fanatics catch that dangerous energy. In contrast, I have gained this civic energy through a careful sturdy of the foundations and origins of the prindciples found in our Constitution.

Is sum, I feel like the time is not right to delve into contemporary politics. Rather, I feel like we must first completely understand the origins of the principles that we will fight for when the time comes to delve.

We'll see you next month
