Baby Survives Three Abortion Attempts In a British case just now documented in the Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, it has been revealed that a fetus survived at least three abortion attempts and was born alive at 24 weeks old. The child is now a healthy 2-year-old and is the first long-term abortion survivor to have been born so prematurely, reports London's Mirror newspaper. The baby's 24-year-old mother, who has not been named, only discovered she was pregnant at 22 weeks and decided that she wanted an abortion because she could not cope with a second child. In Great Britain, abortion is legal prior to 24 weeks gestation. The Mirror reports that the mother was given a series of abortion drugs over four days at a private clinic. An ultrasound scan revealed that the fetus had died, but hours later the mother went into labor. The baby boy was delivered at 24 weeks. He spent seven-and-a-half weeks on a ventilator and fought life-threatening infections and severe lung disease. He finally went home from the hospital when he was 7 months old. Dr. Paul Clarke, the author of the report in the Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, said, "This mother went through extreme hardship waiting to see if her baby was going to make it. She was told to expect him to die so many times. I am full of admiration for her." Clarke said pediatricians often intervene to save babies who have survived abortions. "Late abortions raise serious practical, ethical and professional concerns," he wrote. "The dilemma of being telephoned about an infant born showing signs of life following termination of pregnancy is one that many pediatricians have faced."
