============================================
Rebbeca Culey Langman - 1833-1913 and her experience with the Willie Handcart Company, as told by her Granddaughter - Edith Haws Eyring 1887-1986:
---------------------------
Rebeca arrived in New York in time to join the second handcart company under Captain Willie.
There were five hundred people who started in this company, and consisted mainly of immigrants from Great Britain.
They arrived in Iowa City, the starting point, near the end of June, and discovered that the tents and handcarts for their use, were not provided.
This delay was serious as it was getting late in the season and dangerous to try and cross the plains in the middle of July wheren they were ready to start.

Rebeca recalled there were three people at each cart, which held all their provisions, bedding, and clothing.
Rebecca often said that they took turns pulling, one would pull and two push.
They started on their journey full of faith and singing as the went along.
They traveled about twenty miles a day and had about reached the black hills in South Dakota when the storms started.

One family with the company had a wagon and could travel a little faster therefore did not want to wait for the rest.
The Captain counseled them to remain with the company, saying that it would be safer, but they decided to go on.
The next day the company came onto what was left of their camp.
The horses were gone and all the family killed except a small baby they found on the wagon.
By this time the company's provisions were getting low and it became necessary to go on rations of one-half pound of flour a day.

If the cattle died, they were used for food, even the heads and the hides.
The hides were left until the last to give them time to dry, then they were roasted over the coals until crisp and it tasted rather good.
A cow died with a calf and these were also used.
Many people had died as a result of wading streams up to their waists.
Their clothes would freeze and remain that way until camp was made and a fire built.
As many as fifteen were buried in a single grave in a morning before leaving camp.

It seemed that the people lost some of their feelings seeing so many die, they didn't know if they would be next or not.
At last, the snow became four feet deep and we had to shovel a road before we could move.

One morning the captain said that there were enough provisions in camp for one day, and asked if we would have it all at once or divide it into three.
We divided it.
Then we sang "And should we die before our journey's through, all is well, all is well."
Then we gave up to die.

The lord knew our situation and sent us deliverance.
Two messengers burst into camp and told us to cheer up as there were ten wagon of provisions about three miles away, which couldn't come closer because of the snow.
They told us to eat what provionsions we had for breakfast and by night we would be at their camp.
Most of the day the snow had to be shoveled to make a road and ti was the next day before we reached the camp.
There was a warm fire and a good supper prepared for us.
Our overwhelming feeling could not be described.
